Earlier this month, Ryan Reynolds announced that Dogpool, a member of the Deadpool Corps, will appear in Deadpool 3 by sharing a photo of the pup on Instagram. Now, fans are getting a new look at the weirdly adorable pooch. On Wednesday, Dogpool's official Instagram shared a new photo of the dog relaxing in costume with her belly exposed and the caption "Just letting it al hang out". You can check it out for yourself below.

Who Is Dogpool?

In comics, Dogpool is a member of the Deadpool Corps. Hailing from Earth-103173, Dogpool -- formerly Wilson -- was used as an animal test subject for Mascara X for a mascara that continuously replenished after just one application. Unfortunately, Wilson was disfigured and ended up with the ability to heal from any wounds but his owners didn't realize this and threw him in a dumpster. Wilson ended up being rescued by a circus truck and soon became the circus' Death Defying Hound Deadpool until he was recruited for the Deadpool Corps by Deadpool of Earth-616.

The character has appeared in a number of issues of comics related to the Deadpool Corps, but of particular interest is the Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe miniseries, a series that many fans theorize could be the story that Deadpool 3 will loosely adapt.

Deadpool 3's Release Date Has Been Delayed

earlier this month it was also announced that Deadpool 3 will now be released on July 26, 2024. The film was previously dated to be released on May 3, 2024, before reports indicated that the film would move so production could continue after the recently-wrapped SAG-AFTRA actors' strike. Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy previously confirmed that the film was only half completed before the strike went into effect.

"I wish I knew. I don't even know if we officially have [a release date]. I know we were gonna be May 3," Levy revealed. "Certainly, the actors' strike and the long pause in production have put that release date in true risk. We've shot half the movie. I've edited half the movie. We're dying to get back to work and get this movie out next year."

Who Is in the Cast of Deadpool 3?

Deadpool 3 will star Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson / Deadpool, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapi?i? as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus, and Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen in currently-unknown roles. Jennifer Garner will be reprising her role as Elektra.

"I think you're giving me too much credit," Reynolds explained in a previous interview with Collider. "I don't believe that I'm responsible for Hugh coming back. I always wanted Hugh to come back. My first meeting with Kevin Feige when Disney bought Fox years ago, maybe three years ago, or three and a half, four years ago, I'm not sure, was about doing a movie with the two of us, a Deadpool Wolverine movie. And that was not possible at the time. And then Hugh just happened to call at that perfect moment and express that he'd be interested in coming back and doing this one more time. And the contents of that conversation, I'll let Hugh, because I know it's only inevitable that you and Hugh are going to speak at some point soon, I'm sure. I'll let Hugh answer that on his own. But he expressed interest in coming back, and then it was my job to take that to Kevin Feige one more time and sell it."

Tim Burton's Comments on Nightmare Before Christmas Sequel Will Upset Fans https://comicbook.com/horror/news/nightmare-before-christmas-sequel-never-happening-tim-burton-says/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 04:58:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 09da3524-bb91-41ec-a15b-adb687d5b80a

Hopefully you're not holding your breath waiting in anticipation for a sequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas. One of the most iconic pieces of holiday pop culture, many have thought the movie might be a perfect candidate for a revival decades after it was first released; after all, Disney has been busy making sequels and follow-ups to projects like Hocus Pocus and The Mighty Ducks. If Tim Burton gets his way, however, the Nightmare franchise will never be touched again.

"I've done sequels, I've done other things, I've done reboots, I've done all that shit, right? I don't want that to happen to this. It's nice that people are maybe interested [in another one], but I'm not," Burton said in a recent chat with Empire.

He added, "I feel like that old guy who owns a little piece of property and won't sell to the big power plant that wants to take my land."

Composer Danny Elfman, the singing voice of Jack Skellington and the maestro behind the film's score, shared a similar sentiment when we spoke with him last year.

"I don't think so," Elfman told ComicBook.com about a Nightmare follow-up. "I think Tim has always felt that no, this is what it was."

"But you know, it wouldn't totally shock me if he came back with... If he had a fresh take on it, I would certainly go for the ride with him," the composer continued. "But he's never expressed any interest in that. I think he felt like this was a pure thing and it was what it was and that to try to do sequels on it would, I think it's just not inspired him. But I won't ever speak for Tim. It's his universe."

Though both Burton and Elfman seem cold on the idea of a sequel, director Henry Selick says a potential prequel or origin could fly. "It might be more interesting to do a prequel," the director admitted last month. "There might be a more interesting story there about how Jack became the King of Halloweentown."

The Nightmare Before Christmas is now streaming on Disney+.

The Bikeriders: Austin Butler, Tom Hardy Movie Finds New Distributor https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-bikeriders-austin-butler-tom-hardy-movie-finds-new-distributor/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 04:26:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 52a22fb2-6a69-45c9-b26b-314787d95628

Just days after it was reported that Disney would no longer be releasing the film, The Bikeriders has found a new home. On Wednesday, THR reported that Focus Features has acquired the worldwide rights to the New Regency film and there are plans to release the film sometime in 2024. Focus will handle the domestic release of the film while Universal Pictures International will handle international release.

"We are delighted to add such a riveting project to next year's strong slate of films. We look forward to once again working alongside New Regency and reuniting with the multi-talented Jeff Nichols on another one of his visionary projects," Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said.

"We are excited to team up again with our Focus Features partners and look forward to another successful collaboration. And we couldn't be prouder of The Bikeriders, Jeff Nichols and all the talent he has brought together to create this truly exceptional film," New Regency chair-CEO Yariv Milchan added.

What Is The Bikeriders About?

The Bikeriders is a furious drama following the rise of a fictional 1960s Midwestern motorcycle club through the lives of its members. Inspired by Danny Lyon's iconic book of photography, The Bikeriders immerses you in the look, feel, and sounds of the bare-knuckled, grease-covered subculture of '60s motorcycle riders. Kathy (Comer), a strong-willed member of the Vandals who's married to a wild, reckless bikerider named Benny (Butler), recounts the Vandals' evolution over the course of a decade, beginning as a local club of outsiders united by good times, rumbling bikes, and respect for their strong, steady leader Johnny (Hardy). Over the years, Kathy tries her best to navigate her husband's untamed nature and his allegiance to Johnny, with whom she feels she must compete for Benny's attention. As life in the Vandals gets more dangerous, and the club threatens to become a more sinister gang, Kathy, Benny and Johnny are forced to make choices about their loyalty to the club and to each other.

The ensemble cast of The Bikeriders includes Austin Butler as Benny, Jodie Comer as Kathy, Tom Hardy as Johnny, Michael Shannon as Zipco, Mike Faist as Danny Lyon, Norman Reedus as Funny Sonny, and Boyd Holbrook as Cal.

Austin Butler Will Next Appear in Dune: Part Two

In addition to his role in The Bikeriders, Butler is also set to appear in Dune: Part Two as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. That film has been delayed to spring 2024.

"[We] really try to dig into the humanity of [the character]. It's that thing of the bad guy in the world doesn't feel like he's the bad guy," Butler explained in an interview last year. "He feels like he's the hero of his own story. And that can be a hard thing with certain characters; with others, it's easier, but you have to not judge the character, and you have to find a way to feel the motivation towards anyone of your actions. So, we had a lot of conversations and crafted that together."

"Denis is so thoughtful, he doesn't miss anything, and his attention to detail is remarkable," he said. "Denis is amazing; he's such an incredible director. The energy on his sets is amazing, everyone trusts him so much, and it's such a well-oiled machine, and he's a master of the craft."

Are you glad that The Bikeriders has found a new home? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section.

Mrs. Doubtfire Director Confirms Sequel Talks Happened Prior to Robin Williams' Death https://comicbook.com/movies/news/mrs-doubtfire-director-confirms-sequel-robin-williams-death/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 03:13:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 0d1c7ae4-26f1-4d09-b72b-69e395cd18f3

Mrs. Doubtfire was one of Robin Williams' biggest hits, and a cultural juggernaut at the time of its release. The Academy Award-winning film would gross over $400 million globally on a reported budget of just $25 million, which typically would immediately trigger talk of a full blown franchise in Hollywood. Despite hopes for a follow-up, Mrs. Doubtfire never returned, but that doesn't mean attempts weren't made. Speaking in a new interview, director Christopher Columbus confirmed that he and star Robin Williams never spoke about a sequel to the movie until just before the fan-favorite comedian passed away.

"He and I didn't talk about a sequel until the year he passed away," Columbus confirmed to Business Insider. "We had a script that was written and it was the last time I saw Robin. I went to his house and we sat down and talked about it and the script was really strong. Robin's only comment was, 'Boss, do I have to be in the suit as much this time?' It was physically demanding. For Robin, I think it was like running a marathon every day he was in the Doubtfire costume. He was older, obviously. So we talked about it and I think he was hoping in the rewrite we would cut back on the Doubtfire character. But then Robin passed away so there will never be a sequel to 'Mrs. Doubtfire.'"

When asked if steps had been taken after the fact to make sure a sequel to the movie was never going to be made, Columbus clarified that the studio (the Disney-owned 20th Century) controls the rights to the movie and the character. As a result they could very well make a new movie or a sequel if they wished.

"Fox/Disney owns the rights, I think. I don't think the Williams family owns it, so the studio can do whatever they want with it. Should they? God no. I will certainly be very vocal about it if they decide to do it."

Though a sequel seems off the table, Columbus confirmed that he still has a lot of footage from the production of Mrs. Doubtfire and hey're eager to have an editor sort through it all and create a documentary about the making of the movie.

"There are roughly 972 boxes of footage from "Doubtfire" - footage we used in the movie, outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage - in a warehouse somewhere," Columbus revealed. "We want to show Robin's process. There is something special and magical about how he went about his work and I think it would be fun to delve into it."

Superman: Legacy: Original Miss Teschmacher Actress Congratulates Sara Sampaio on Casting https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-legacy-valerie-perrine-congratulates-sara-sampaio-eve-teschmacher-role/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 03:01:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt bb62a61c-9847-4ac7-b482-da962ea451b5

Casting on Superman: Legacy is nearing its end as James Gunn and DC Studios begin to round out the cast for the picture. The reveals this week alone have confirmed Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen, and Eve Teschmacher are all appearing in the film with the latter being played by Hollywood newcomer Sara Sampaio. First created as a character in Richard Donner's Superman movies, Teschmacher has now become synonymous with Luthor, often serving as his assistant and love interest. In Superman (1978), Teschmacher was played by Valerie Perrine, who's now wishing Sampaio much success in the role.

"Congratulations from the Original Miss Teschmacher to @sarasampaio the New Miss Teschmacher in @jamesgunn #SupermanLegacy @wbpictures," Perrine said in a new post Tuesday. "I look forward to seeing this iconic character on the big screen again! Good Luck Sara!"

What is Superman: Legacy going to be about?

When Superman: Legacy picks up, movie-goers will see a world already full of superheroes, and Superman is already in the midst of his crime-fighting career. The film is set to feature Lex Luthor and Teschmacher, and rumors also point toward the potential inclusion of Brainiac as well.

"It's not an origin story," DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran told reporters earlier this year. "It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice, and the American way. He has kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned."

Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned." Along with David Corenswet's Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane, the cast includes Nathan Fillion as the Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as the mass-shifting Metamorpho, and Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as The Authority's The Engineer.

The DC Universe officially kicks off with Creature Commandos, which has yet to set a release date, and Superman: Legacy, which enters theaters July 11, 2025.

Scream 7 Reportedly Targeting Neve Campbell, Patrick Dempsey https://comicbook.com/horror/news/scream-7-reportedly-targeting-neve-campbell-patrick-dempsey/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 01:52:00 +0000 Spencer Perry e9468d28-8cbf-4f46-b44f-ddb082f818a5

Scream 7 has been in the headlines more this week than at any other point of its development cycle. Yesterday brought word that series star Melissa Barrera had been fired by Spyglass, following recent statements about the conflict between Israel and Palestine which the production company considered antisemitic in nature. Less than a day later it was confirmed that Jenna Ortega, who played Barrera's on-screen sister and has become a household name thanks to Netflix's Wednesday, would also not be returning for the next sequel. With the new Scream movies without their two biggest stars in the front, something new is being considered for the sequel, with a trip back to the well seemingly in the cards.

According to a report from Variety, Scream 7 is essentially starting with a brand new draft of its screenplay which will be replacing its lead protagonists. Though Barrera and Ortega only had a two-picture deal for the series, completing it with Scream VI, producers were planning for them to anchor the new movie. Now that neither of them will appear though, the trade reports that Scream's producers are looking for franchise staples to return.

The trade notes that both Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox, original stars that have appeared in nearly every movie, could be targets and are on a "wish list" to appear in the new movie. Campbell notably did not appear in Scream VI following a salary dispute. As the outlet reveals, the producers of the series are "keen to see her reclaim her iconic character."

Another character reportedly on the wish list to star in Scream 7 is none other than Patrick Dempsey. Just voted the Sexiest Man Alive, and having just starred in the Scream-like slasher Thanksgiving, Dempsey first appeared in 2000's Scream 3 as Detective Mark Kincaid. Though he only had the one appearance in the Scream series it has since been established that Dempsey's Kincaid and Campbell's Sydney Prescott are married and have a family together.

Despite appearances in the first five movies of the series, Neve Campbell opted not to return for Scream VI after a dispute over her salary forced her to walk away from the sequel. The actress was previously very open about the fact that she wouldn't be returning despite becoming the face of the franchise. At a convention earlier this month Campbell actually addressed the movie for the first time publicly after finally watching it.

"I watched it until two weeks ago. It took me a minute, I don't know why," Campbell said during a spotlight panel at Monster-Mania Con this month. "I actually thought they did a really good job. I think the cast are really powerful, wonderful actors...I don't wish these movies ill will. I wanted the movie to be good. It's not like I'm sitting in my house going, 'I hope it sucks, I hope it doesn't do well.' I care about all the people involved. There's someone at the top who only thinks about money and that's their prerogative."

According to Variety's report on these major Scream 7 rewrites, it's possible that set pieces and twists that were written for the movie will still make it into the draft, but the lead characters are where new decisions will need to be made. Scribes James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick will be working on the new draft of the script, but none of the three stars reportedly on the Scream 7 "wish list" have been in any kind of negotiations for a return. No official release date has been set for Scream 7, but Happy Death Day's Christopher Landon has been hired to direct the project.

Scream's Melissa Barrera Breaks Silence on Franchise Firing https://comicbook.com/horror/news/scream-melissa-barrera-breaks-silence-scream-7-firing/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 00:43:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 81335578-565a-4c7a-8fbc-d71d23e9ddd8

Nearly 24 hours after Melissa Barrera was dropped from Scream VII after controversial social media posts, the actor has issued her first comments on the firing. In a statement shared to her Instagram Stories on Wednesday evening, Barrera says she "condemns Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia and hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people."

"As a latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need," the actor wrote in her post.

She added, "Every person on this earth- regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status- deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom."

The Scream V and Scream VI star went on to clarify her original comments, which reportedly landed her in hot water for taking an anti-Semitic stance.

"I believe a group of people are NOT their leadership, and that no governing body should be above criticism," she added. "I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence, and for peaceful co-existence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom. Silence is not an option for me."

Barrera initially slammed the media for what she calls a pro-Israel stance in its ongoing war with Hamas.

"I have been actively looking for videos and information about the Palestinian side for the last 2 weeks or so, following accounts etc. Why? Because western media only shows the other side," Barrera said in October posts. "Why they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself. Usually the algorithm on social media gets the gist. Well... My discover page on IG will ONLY show me videos showing and talking about the Israeli side. Censorship is very real. Palestinians know this, they know the world has been trying to make them invisible for decades. Keep sharing."

Scream V and Scream VI are streaming on Paramount+. Scream VII is in development and has yet to set a release date.

Toy Story 5 Confirms Major Characters https://comicbook.com/movies/news/toy-story-5-major-characters-returning-confirmed/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 21:44:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt fd3647db-6612-48ef-bea2-bb3fc60387cf

Though Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) have been mainstays in the Toy Story franchise since its inception, there was a lingering question as to whether they'd return in the property's next film. According to Allen, however, fans need not worry--both he and Hanks will be returning for the film. In an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon Tuesday, Allen confirmed Disney's approached the duo to reprise their iconic roles.

"Bob Iger, head of Disney, said it was on. He actually said that it was going to happen," Allen told the late-night host. "They have reached out to Tom and I to reprise the roles. They're not saying anything about it."

He added, "You wonder if four was too many. Is five going to be too much? According to the scuttlebutt, the writer that's doing it wrote one of the better ones and he said, 'If I didn't get this right, I wouldn't do it.' So, it could be a very, very interesting way to reunite it."

The film has been one of Disney's most secretive projects, with no filmmakers officially attached to the project as of yet. Still, Pixar executive Pete Docter says the film will surprise those who tune in.

"The thing we've been really trying to do, and this has been the case for a while, is we've been looking at them a little bit like, okay, we're not planning for the future. When we made the first Toy Story, we had no idea there would be a Toy Story 2," Docter said of the first full-length computer-animated film that earned nearly $375 million at the global box office nearly 30 years ago. "We're just trying to make this movie. But that in making the movie, it takes you places, unexpected places, which is what I love about the creative process. If I knew exactly what I was doing when I started making a movie, there'd kind of be no point in making it. I discover so much along the way."

Disney has yet to reveal when Toy Story 5 will hit theaters. The first four films in the franchise are now streaming on Disney+.

Marvel Star Kelsey Grammer Confident He'll Return as Beast in the MCU https://comicbook.com/movies/news/kelsey-grammer-beast-cameo-mcu-return-the-marvels-x-men/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 21:00:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 7e74f0d6-aa57-49f0-b33a-5c0a7946dde1

[Spoiler alert for The Marvels.] "Oh, my stars and garters." That may have been your reaction to The Marvels credits scene, which ended with Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) trapped in another universe after the Kree Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) tore a hole in the fabric of space. Feared lost by her allies Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), Monica actually ended up elsewhere in the multiverse: in a reality where her late mother, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), is the cosmic superhero Binary -- and an ally of the mutant Beast (Kelsey Grammer) and the X-Men.

According to Grammer, it's not the last audiences will see of the blue-furred Henry "Hank" McCoy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"It is my hope that you will [see him again]. I can say with a certain amount of confidence that you will. I would love to," the Frasier star told TheWrap about reprising his X-Men role in the future.

Grammer first played Beast in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand and made a cameo in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past, both times wearing makeup and prosthetics. In The Marvels, the CG-animated Beast more closely resembled his appearance in the classic comic books and the '90s X-Men: The Animated Series. Grammer was "very pleased" by fans' reactions to the cameo, adding: "I've always wanted to play him again. I see him as an extraordinary character, a real character of gravitas and importance in our culture. I'm delighted Beast is back and hope he's back in a real way."

The actor's comments seem to suggest Beast could return in Deadpool 3, which stars Reynolds as Wade Wilson and Grammer's former X-Men co-star Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine. The multiversal sequel from Marvel Studios is rumored to include cameos from other characters who appeared in the defunct Fox X-Verse. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen -- who played Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto, respectively, in multiple X-Men movies since 2000 -- also seem poised for a comeback after Stewart returned as a Professor X variant in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

"We're not done, Sir Ian and myself," Stewart said in an interview earlier this year, adding they've "got plans" for the frenemy mutants. Whether that's Deadpool 3 -- or potentially Avengers: Secret Wars, as hinted by mentions of incursions in the MCU -- remains to be seen.

Marvel Studios' The Marvels is now playing in theaters.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Animated Trilogy Gets First Trailer https://comicbook.com/anime/news/justice-league-crisis-on-infinite-earths-animated-trilogy-gets-first-trailer/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 20:25:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 03114738-b3c0-4c85-a5fe-fb64c09616dc

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has released the first trailer for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One, the first of three direct-to-consumer animated movies based on the comic book mega-crossover from the 1980s. The event centers on The Monitor, a being of nearly infinite cosmic power, bringing the heroes of DC's multiverse together to do battle with the Anti-Monitor, a his doppelganger from the anti-matter universe. In the story, the Anti-Monitor was destroying universes, transforming them into anti-matter to expand his domain, and weakening the Monitor's power in the process.

The original story, from 1985, created seismic changes at DC, merging the multiple Earths of the multiverse into one single, coherent (if cluttered) timeline. Timelines shifted, origins changed, and some characters ceased to exist entirely. It also led to the rise of event comics as one of the direct market's most important sales drivers.

You can see it below.

DC has published enough sequels to Crisis on Infinite Earths in the years since that characters within the DC Universe coined a specific term for them, "Crisis Events." Those sequels include 1994's Zero Hour: A Crisis in Time, 2005's Infinite Crisis, 2008's Final Crisis, 2011's Flashpoint, and 2022's Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths. DC's television Arrowverse adapted the story into the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" event in 2019. That story spanned Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman episodes, as well as cameo appearances by Black Lightning and numerous characters from throughout DC TV history, including Tom Welling's Clark Kent, Kevin Conroy's Bruce Wayne, and more.

Since multi-part animated adaptations of both Crisis on Infinite Earths and Watchmen were announced, some fans have questioned whether these two massive stories meant DC would be putting their long-running series of animated movies on ice after 2024. If so, it would line up with the creation of James Gunn's new DC Universe, which he has promised will tie live-action movies and TV together with animation and video games into one clear universe with the same actors playing the parts across all media. Warners has yet to confirm these suspicions, though, and it's equally possible that they just felt like they really needed a guaranteed win while the live-action movies are on hiatus.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths releases in 2024. DC's newest animated movie, Justice League: Warworld, premiered at Comic-Con in July ahead of its release Digital, 4K Ultra HD, and Blu-ray.

Christopher Nolan Addresses James Bond Rumors https://comicbook.com/movies/news/james-bond-007-christopher-nolan-directing-rumors/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 19:48:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 5cd0d733-d4c2-47ac-ac10-1fd440baaf23

Christopher Nolan addressed another round of those James Bond rumors this week. The director sat down with the Associated Press to hype the home release of Oppenheimer. In his comments, he sadly told them that he wasn't going to direct 007's next outing. This all comes as the James Bond franchise continues to develop whatever's next. MGM has not cast the next actor to step into the role that Daniel Craig had occupied for so many years. Whoever that actor is, they won't be taking directions from Nolan when the project gets shooting. So, still no clarity on who the eventual filmmaker will be. But, the Oppenheimer helmer had to clear the air before things got out of hand.

"No, sadly no," Nolan told the outlet. "No truth to those rumors, but I'm very thrilled the strike is over and we can all get back to work." In the past, Nolan has not shied away from talking about how much of an undertaking these big franchise films can be. His recent work would suggest that it would take a lot to get him back into that arena. But, you can never say never!

Has Nolan Ever Wanted To Direct James Bond?

(Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images)

This hasn't been the first time that these James Bond rumors have reared their heads. In an appearance on Josh Horowitz's Happy, Sad, Confused podcast this summer, Nolan got asked about the constant murmurings. To his credit, the director was very polite about the prospect of being asked to do a 007 movie. However, the James Bond franchise is in a state of recalibration after No Time To Die. Daniel Craig is off to solve murder mysteries for the time being. And that leaves some other actor to step into that tuxedo and another director to hop behind the lens.

"Well, not diplomatic, I would say honest about it. I love those movies. The influence of those movies on my filmography is embarrassingly apparent. You know? So there's no attempt to shy away from that. I love the films," the director admitted. "It would be an amazing privilege to do one. When you take on a character like that, you're taking on a set of constraints. You have to have the right attitude towards that. It has to be the right moment in your creative life where you can express what you want to express and burrow into something within the appropriate constraints. You don't ever want to take on something like that and do it wrong."

How Far Along Is The New James Bond?

(Photo: MGM)

Not too long ago, the creative team in charge of James Bond sat down to talk about where they are in development. Producer Barbara Broccoli told The Guardian that they've got a ways to go. There is a reinvention of the concept taking place. Now, it will still be familiar. These are still spy/action movies with a focus on the titular 007. But, over the course of the last few years, it's become clear that something different is going to have to happen after Craig's tenure.

Broccoli shared, "I go back to GoldenEye when everyone was saying 'the cold war is over, the wall is over, Bond is dead, no need for Bond, the whole world's at peace and now there's no villains' - and boy was that wrong!"

"Daniel gave us the ability to mine the emotional life of the character ... and also the world was ready for it," she continued in the piece. "I think these movies reflect the time they are in, and there's a big, big road ahead reinventing it for the next chapter and we haven't even begun with that."

Who do you think will direct the next James Bond? Let us know down in the comments!

Disney's Wish Movie Ratings: Audience and Critic Scores Revealed https://comicbook.com/movies/news/disney-wish-movie-ratings-rotten-tomatoes-critics-audience-score/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 18:35:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo ef1d9635-2819-4487-be03-3a4c15f71479

Walt Disney Animation Studios might have wished upon a star for a better reception to Wish, the animated musical celebrating the studio's 100-year anniversary. Directed by Chris Buck (Frozen) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (head of story on Raya and the Last Dragon), Wish pays homage to the 62-film Disney Animation canon that began with Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937. Set in the magical kingdom of Rosas, Wish tells the origin story of how the wishing star upon which so many Disney characters made a wish -- from Pinocchio to Peter Pan to The Princess and the Frog and everything in-between -- came to be.

Wish debuted with a 64% "fresh" on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, but its critical reception has since settled at 49% "rotten" on the Tomatometer. "Wish earns some tugs at the heartstrings with the way it warmly references many of the studio's classics," reads the critics' consensus, "but nostalgia's no substitute for genuine storytelling magic -- no matter how beautifully animated it might be."

That's Walt Disney Animation's lowest Rotten Tomatoes score since 2001's Atlantis: The Lost Empire received a 49% approval from critics. (Only two Walt Disney Animation Studios films, 2003's Brother Bear and 2005's Chicken Little, fared worse with critics at 37%.) This means the end of the studio's 15-film, 16-year fresh streak: every Walt Disney Animation Studios film since Meet the Robinsons in 2007 received a positive response from professional reviewers, an era that saw the release of such films as Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Zootopia, Big Hero 6, Moana, and Encanto.

Verified moviegoers granted Wish an 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is behind audience reaction to rival family film Trolls Band Together (92%) but higher than the studio's previous Thanksgiving release, 2022's Strange World (62%). That was Disney Animation's lowest since Ralph Breaks the Internet (64%) in 2018: audiences were more favorable to 2019's Frozen II (92%), 2021's Raya (97%), and 2021's Encanto (93%).

In Wish, Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force -- a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe -- the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico -- to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.

The cast includes Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) as Asha, Chris Pine (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) as Magnifico, and Alan Tudyk (Star Wars: Rogue One) as Asha's talking goat, Valentino. Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn direct from a script by Jennifer Lee (Frozen, Frozen II) and Allison Moore (Night Sky). The Wish soundtrack is from Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Julia Michaels and Grammy-winning producer/songwriter/musician Benjamin Rice, with a score by composer Dave Metzger.

Disney's Wish is now playing in theaters.

Jenna Ortega Drops Out of Scream 7 Due to Wednesday Shooting Schedule https://comicbook.com/movies/news/jenna-ortega-drops-out-of-scream-7-due-to-wednesday-shooting-schedule/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 18:23:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 63628fd7-7f6b-44b4-8582-2d4694282958

Jenna Ortega will reportedly not return for the next Scream movie, due to scheduling conflicts with the second season of Wednesday. The star is not expected to return for the seventh installment in the long-running horror franchise, which could be a real blow to the movie. While the sixth Scream opened to a massive $67 million globally last year, it was also the first movie without Neve Campbell, who could not come to a deal with producers. Now, not only is Ortega going to be absent, but just yesterday, Melissa Barrera (who played Ortega's sister) was fired from the film.

That suggests that the next installment will have to be something special to overcome the sense that the franchise is losing its direction. After decades of following the same handful of characters, this revival can't make it three movies before two of its most popular characters are out the door.

Barrera was reportedly fired yesterday after Redditors dug up a number of social media posts she made on her Instagram story during October, supporting Palestine in their ongoing war with Israel. She reposted and commented on a number of stories, and called the attacks on Palestinian civilians "genocide." Support for Palestine has become a lightning rod in recent weeks, with Oscar-winning Blue Beetle star Susan Sarandon being dropped by her management at United Talent Agency for comments opposed to Israel.

"This is my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make," Scream VII director Christopher Landon wrote in a now-deleted post on social media, along with a broken heart emoji.

Scream V and Scream VI revitalized the franchise like few other franchise reboots could. Scream 6 ended up being a franchise record-setter, earning more domestically in the US and Canada than any other installment, and hitting overall numbers ($169 million worldwide on a $30 million budget) not seen since Scream 2 and the franchise's best heyday. Barrera had solidified her character Sam Carpenter (daughter of original Ghostface killer, Billy Loomis) as a scream-queen icon, right up there alongside Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott. That said, Scream VI also elevated Sam's half-sister Tara to main character/scream queen status, as well; Tara is played by Netflix's Wednesday star Jenna Ortega, who has inarguably become a much bigger mainstream star than Barrera. Scream 7 has all the runway needed to kill Sam offscreen or send her away (for a possible return later), while Tara (Ortega) leads the next installment of the franchise.

Scream (that's the fifth one!) and Scream VI are streaming on Paramount+. Scream VII is in development.

The Fugitive Director Andrew Davis Explains Why 90s Thrillers Are Better Than Thrillers Today https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-fugitive-director-andrew-davis-explains-why-90s-thrillers-are-better-than-thrillers-today/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 15:19:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame ad4eb694-5d18-4bae-aae4-56799e444af0

In the early 1990s, you would be hard pressed to find a director with a bigger pair of back to back hits than filmmaker Andrew Davis's Under Siege (1992) and The Fugitive (1993). The latter, which earned almost $400 million against a reported $44 million budget, has gone on to be a contemporary classic in the thriller genre -- something that was hardly a guarantee, after a long and troubled development and production. Speaking with ComicBook.com in support of the movie's 30th anniversary re-release recently, Davis talked about the movie's verisimilitude, as well as the big, theatrical presentation that makes it continue to speak to audiences.

The Fugitive was one of a number of action-thrillers that hit in the early and mid 1990s, pitting big-name stars against long odds. In Davis's view, it's the theatricality of the movies that make them appealing, while the realism of more modern movies can sometimes ice out audiences who aren't paying close attention to detail.

"The pace of the movie and the rhythm of the movie...it's an interesting fine line between things that are so fast-cut now that you can hardly follow what's going on," Davis told ComicBook.com. "And people who mumble when they talk now, it's kind of reality...you have actors who mumble to keep it real, and you can't understand the words. So I think it's got a classic structure in terms of the information that's being given to people, and how you follow it."

He also talked with us about the bigger picture of The Fugitive, and how people's innate distrust of corporate power and influence likely helps keep the movie relevant years later.

"Certainly, there's been a lot of discussion about the role of pharmaceutical companies and their dastardly doing of putting out drugs that were hurting people," Davis said. "That's what the basic story of The Fugitive is, is about a doctor who says, 'This Provasic stuff is causing people to bleed,' and they have to shut him up, because they wanted to make money. So that's very relevant today. I think there's been so much discussion about the role of pharmaceutical companies, and their ability to manipulate things. Now, they're not all bad -- my son's a doctor, and it's very difficult to bring something to product, but I think that's why it's relevant today."

The Naughty Nine Costume Designer Talks Danny Glover As Santa https://comicbook.com/movies/news/disney-santa-the-naughty-nine-danny-glover-costume-designer-interview/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 15:15:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 1713a0d3-a499-4d2c-9930-e914c03b148f

The Naughty Nine premieres tonight on Disney Channel and viewers will be delighted to meet Danny Glover as Santa Claus. In the Disney Channel Original Movie, the beloved actor is the man in charge up at the North Pole. ComicBook.com interviewed The Naughty Nine costume designer Julia Caston about working with Glover and his interactions with the cast and crew. When a star of that caliber steps onto set, it inspires everyone to bring their A-game. With Santa, Caston said that she really wanted to communicate him being in his off-time, while still keeping his gentlemanly leisure feel. Read about her process down below.

"Oh yes, he was so wonderful to work with and it was a surprise when they told me the casting. I was so happy to hear that it was somebody as amazing as Danny Glover and it's so great," Caston began. "So yes, this is an Alberto [Belli] thing. We work together to come up with the look we really wanted because its the day after Christmas, right? So, Santa would kind of be on his off hours. What does he look like on his off hours?"

"And we decided that we kind of wanted him to be, a gentleman. We wanted him to have an elegance about him. We wanted him to be relaxed, but with fabrics that were rich, right? We wanted him to feel cozy," she continued. "He's just based on a very elegant, trendy kind of well-fitted. I was like, he's incredibly like put together. He's just like, you walk in his office and he's like, oh no, I got a handle on this thing."

"It was fun. And we also wanted to do justice to the actor as well. The idea for this kind of grew. We had discussions before he was cast, but then once he was cast, we're like, 'Let's grow this into his very nattily dressed gentleman on his days off," the designer added. "So, that's how that came about. It was really fun to work with him. When we heard I was like, 'This is great!' He's so wonderful and he's such an acting icon. He's so incredible and what a what a win for us. It elevated the whole movie, in a way I thought."

How Do The Naughty Nine Assemble Their Christmas Looks?

naughty-nine-costumes-exclusive.jpg
(Photo: Disney)

Elsewhere in our conversation with Julia Caston, we talked about tackling the look of Christmas in The Naughty Nine. They had Santa covered, but young actors like Winslow Fegley, Imogen Cohen and Ayden Elijah are all in the mix too. How did the costume designer dream up how these young adventures would look? Well, it comes down to some collaboration with director Alberto Belli and some classic color influences.

"How do I conceive it? Okay, so. Well, you know, I met with the director Alberto and I Listen to his concept and think what he wants to do with it. He was really interested in creating this kind of magical, elevated, special place that we had never seen before," Caston revealed. "He did that with the the scenery and just how his vision was very clear that he wanted it to be elevated. He wanted it to be on trend and he wanted it to have a little fashion. He wanted it to have a little like fabulousness, right? So taking that on, and then listening."

naughty-nine-exclusive.jpg
(Photo: Disney)

"Reading the script and everything, I just I just was like oh how do I make these characters pop a little bit? Let's get him a little edge. Let's give him a little fun. And ,I wanted the kid that watched it to think, 'That's cuter than the normal elf!' You know? I wanted them to feel. I've never seen a tracksuit elf for a or a racing suit elf. I wanted to take the characters that were being played by all these great actors and give them a little nuance," she added.

Caston continued, "So they all were different and they all felt like they had personality. And so that's, how I went about it was just like listen to Alberto's vision and then add to it. Or elevated it, you know? Just try to make it what he wanted."

The Naughty Nine Is Out Today!

"Mischievous fifth grader Andy finds himself without a visit or presents from Santa on Christmas morning. Realizing he must have landed on the "naughty list" and feeling unfairly maligned, Andy pulls together a team of eight other "naughty listers" to help him execute an elaborate heist at the North Pole to get the presents they feel they deserve. Along the way, the group comes to realize that the very best way off the naughty list is to redirect their unique talents for good -- instead of mischief."

The Naughty Nine premieres on Disney Channel today and will release on Disney+ Thanksgiving Day!

Are you surprised by Glover playing Santa Claus? Let us know in the comments!

Groundhog Day Actor Stephen Tobolowsky Details How Difficult It Was to Film https://comicbook.com/movies/news/groundhog-day-actor-stephen-tobolowsky-details-how-difficult-it-was-to-film/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 12:47:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 038f08da-8787-42ad-ace2-095ad8fa54ed

Stephen Tobolowsky, the prolific character actor who has starred in everything from Freaky Friday to Memento, says that one of the projects he is most proud of is one that he was really only in for a few minutes. Of course, that project -- the 1993 hit Groundhog Day -- remains one of the most popular movies of the last 30 years, so it's not hard to understand why he might be proud of it. Tobolowsky played Ned Ryerson in the movie -- a side character who showed up, frustrated lead character Phil (Bill Murray) with his effusive personality, and eventually got punched in the face.

According to Tobolowsky, who was speaking with ComicBook.com in support of his new movie Love Virtually, one of the things that made Groundhog Day special was the risks the filmmakers took once they figured out what they really wanted to do with the movie. That included throwing out and rewriting chunks of the script during production.

"I'm very proud of Groundhog Day...because it wasn't easy," Tobolowsky told ComicBook.com. "It was a battle to create the show that it was. After the first week, Harold Ramis got with Danny Rubin, our writer, and he says, 'What's the story we're really telling here?' Are we goign to have a series of sequences where Bill just has no consequences and acts crazy, like he was doing in all of those movies back then, or are we telling the story about, what is the time of our life, and how do we use it? And Harold Ramis and Danny thought, 'Number two.' So they started cutting out scenes right and left that were in the original script, and reshaped it. We were getting new pages every day; it was like guerilla theatre, doing Groundhog Day. And in a way, that either leads to disaster, or leads to something brilliant. In terms of Groundhog Day it led to something just brilliant, what Harold Ramis and Danny Rubin did. And of course, Bill was brilliant, and Andie is just stunning. When you see the movie again, you realize the gift of the film is Andie McDowell. She's just so magnificent."

He went on to praise Love Virtually as well, saying that in the time since he filmed his part, the filmmakers did so much post-production work that he really didn't know what to expect when he saw the finished product, which blew him away.

Here's the official synopsis for Love Virtually:

In a world where the Metaverse has become widely adopted, four couples go to ridiculous lengths to find true love in a virtual world. Love Virtually is a retro future satirical rom-com for the Metaverse era, blending live action and 3D animation as It explores and exposes the absurd reality of our world and where we are heading, while probing life's deepest questions such as: How does a celebrity find someone who loves them for their true selves? Is it cheating if it's in VR? and, Is it cheating if it's with an AI?

Garfield's Chris Pratt Resumes Voice Work https://comicbook.com/movies/news/garfields-chris-pratt-resumes-voice-work/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 04:41:00 +0000 Nicole Drum a4dd73af-3445-466a-b3a4-08d71e3b426c

Garfield might be a lazy feline, but Chris Pratt is hard at work once again bringing the iconic character to life. On Tuesday, Pratt took to social media with a behind-the-scenes photo of himself back at work as the voice of the cat. Work on The Garfield Movie had previously been halted due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Now, with those resolved, it's back to work. Check out the post for yourself below.

What is The Garfield Movie About?

Per the studio's official synopsis, "Garfield (voiced by Chris Pratt), the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat, is about to have a wild outdoor adventure! After an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father - scruffy street cat Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson) - Garfield and his canine friend Odie are forced from their perfectly pampered life into joining Vic in a hilarious, high-stakes heist."

Who Stars in the New Garfield?

Chris Pratt will voice the titular cat in the movie, and he will be joined by some big names. Garfield also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Nicholas Hoult, Hannah Waddingham, Cecily Strong, Ving Rhames, Brett Goldstein, and Bowen Yang. Pratt previously voiced Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was the second-highest box office earner of the year thus far, and he also lent his voice to Pixar's Onward, The LEGO Movie, and more.

The film will serve as a reunion for both Ted Lasso and Saturday Night Live. Goldstein has starred alongside Waddingham throughout all three seasons of Ted Lasso, each taking home Emmys for their roles on the Apple TV+ series. Meanwhile, Yang and Strong have worked together for multiple seasons of Saturday Night Live.

Garfield is being directed by Mark Dindal, who helmed The Emperor's New Groove and Chicken Little for Disney. The screenplay was written by Paul A. Kaplan, David Reynolds, and Mark Torgrove. The film is based on the comic strip from Jim Davis, which first appeared in 1978. There were previously two Garfield feature films starring Bill Murray, released in 2004 and 2006.

The Garfield Move is set to open in theaters Summer 2024.

Scream 7 Director Breaks Silence on Melissa Barrera's Firing After Social Media Posts https://comicbook.com/irl/news/scream-7-director-christopher-landon-breaks-silence-on-melissa-barreras-firing/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 01:30:00 +0000 Nicole Drum b19018ef-253c-4138-b4a7-d80695c9c29f

Scream 7 director Christopher Landon is breaking his silence on Melissa Barrera's firing from the film. On Tuesday, reports surfaced that Barrera, who has become the face of the revitalized Scream franchise having appeared in 2022's Scream and this year's Scream VI as Sam Carpenter, had been dropped from the franchise following social media posts in the wake of the Israel-Hamas War. Now, Landon is responding to the news with a short statement that reads, in part "everything sucks."

"This is my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make," Landon wrote in a now-deleted post on social media along with a broken heart emoji.

Barrera has been vocal on social media when it comes to the Israel-Hamas War, comparing the conditions in Gaza to a concentration camp in one Instagram story.

"Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp," Barrera wrote. "Cornering everyone together, with no where to go, no electricity no water ... People have learnt nothing from our histories. And just like our histories, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING."

Spyglass, the studio behind the Scream films, has also released a statement about Barrera's firing (via Discussing Film).

"We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech."

Landon was announced to directing Scream 7 earlier this year with the Happy Death Day director taking over from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who directed both Scream (2022) and Scream VI.

"It came out of the blue for me," Landon said of the Scream 7 job. "My understanding is that there were conversations happening for some time. But I think it was just an opportunity that really arose because the other directors who did the last two films, Tyler and Matt, they wanted to do something else. They were ready to kind of do something different. That's when they obviously had to find someone new, and I've known Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original film, for a long, long time and he's a friend. I think he threw my name into the hat and everybody kind of said, 'Yeah, that makes sense. That seems to make sense.' And I was just thrilled that I got that call because it felt very, it felt like kismet, it felt like a thing that like was always meant to be."

As for how Scream 7 will address Barrera's exit as Sam, that remains to be seen. The film is still in development, though Scream VI did see Sam's sister, Tara -- played by Wednesday star Jenna Ortega -- play a major role which could present the franchise an opportunity to shift.

Scream V and Scream VI are streaming on Paramount+. Scream 7 is in development.

Neve Campbell Reveals Her Thoughts on Scream 6 After Watching It for the First TIme https://comicbook.com/horror/news/scream-7-never-campbell-wishes-no-ill-will-new-movies/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 01:01:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 31b99388-06c6-4e2a-bfd5-c23ba0b9c649

Despite being the protagonist through the Scream franchise's first four films, Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott was reduced to a large cameo role in Scream V before being removed from the call sheet with Scream VI. As it stands now, it seems as if Campbell will also not appear in Scream VII. Even then, the actor says she harbors no "ill will" toward the films in the franchise she doesn't appear in.

"I watched it until two weeks ago. It took me a minute, I don't know why," Campbell said during a spotlight panel at Monster-Mania Con this month (via Deadline). "I actually thought they did a really good job. I think the cast are really powerful, wonderful actors."

She added, "I don't wish these movies ill will. I wanted the movie to be good. It's not like I'm sitting in my house going, 'I hope it sucks, I hope it doesn't do well.' I care about all the people involved. There's someone at the top who only thinks about money and that's their prerogative."

Talks about Campbell's return in Scream VI broke down after the actor claimed the studio wasn't paying her the rightful wage.

"I did not feel that what I was being offered equated to the value that I bring to this franchise, and have brought to this franchise, for 25 years," Campbell told PEOPLE Magazine last fall. "And as a woman in this business, I think it's really important for us to be valued and to fight to be valued."

She added, "I honestly don't believe that if I were a man and had done five installments of a huge blockbuster franchise over 25 years, that the number that I was offered would be the number that would be offered to a man. And in my soul, I just couldn't do that. I couldn't walk on set feeling that -- feeling undervalued and feeling the unfairness, or lack of fairness, around that."

Though she's not currently attached to Scream VII, studio executives may be looking to make a change after Melissa Barrera was fired from the project on Tuesday due to controversial comments made on social media.

Scream V and Scream VI are streaming on Paramount+. Scream VII is in development and has yet to set a release date.

Netflix Is Losing One of Its Fan-Favorite Original Movies in December https://comicbook.com/movies/news/netflix-losing-taylor-swift-reputation-stadium-tour-movie-december/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 00:03:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 1447a296-3195-4ab1-ad36-ad4d586541d6

Netflix is preparing to remove one of its biggest concert movies, and you might need to get ready for it. On Tuesday, the streaming service announced which movies and television shows will be leaving its platform in December of 2023, and it includes one of their previous original releases. Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour, which was released as a Netflix original on December 31, 2018, offers fans a glimpse at Swift's 2018 tour of the same name. The last day to watch Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour on Netflix will be Saturday, December 30th.

This announcement definitely comes as a surprise to Swifties -- both because of Netflix's exclusive distribution of the film, and because the filmed concert has become a staple of the fandom, especially as Swift's subsequent tour, Loverfest, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Swift is currently embarking on her Eras Tour, which covers her first ten albums and debuted its filmed version in theaters earlier this fall.

Why Is the Reputation Stadium Tour Leaving Netflix?

There could be a number of reasons for Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour being removed from Netflix -- including that the streamer's distribution deal for the movie might simply have lapsed. Some other movies and television shows have left Netflix almost exactly five years after they were last uploaded on the platform, and the Reputation Stadium Tour is being removed almost five years to the day of it being released. It's also worth noting that the Reputation Stadium Tour is one of two Netflix originals focusing on Swift, with the second being her January 2020 documentary Miss Americana. It is unclear at this point if Miss Americana will also leave Netflix once that five-year window has lapsed.

In recent years, Swift has also publicly slammed Netflix, after a "deeply sexist" joke in their original series Ginny & Georgia addressed her love life. There is a possibility that Swift could make a new deal for the Reputation Stadium Tour to stream on another platform, as she has worked with Disney+ on the 2020 documentary folklore: the long pond studio sessions. It's also worth mentioning the fact that Swift rerecording her first six albums, with many theorizing that reputation will be the next re-recording to be released. If that does prove to be true, that could add a whole new wrinkle to the streaming home of the Reputation Stadium Tour.

What Is Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Movie About?

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour is a filmed version of Swift's landmark Eras Tour, which completed its first U.S. leg in August. Filmed across three nights of shows in Los Angeles' Sofi Stadium, the film will showcase Swift's performance of songs from all ten of her albums -- Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, reputation, Lover, folklore, evermore, and Midnights. In celebration of the movie's release, AMC upgraded its ticket-booking capacity by five times to account for fan demand. It also priced standard adult tickets at $19.89 -- a reference to the year Swift was born, as well as her fifth album 1989 -- with children's and senior tickets at $13.13, which is a reference to Swift's lucky number.

The Naughty Nine Costume Designer Shares Disney+ Look Details https://comicbook.com/movies/news/disney-the-naughty-nine-costume-designer-look-details/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 23:54:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 6c29ee36-19e7-4d58-aa60-7bf3c8c5189c

The Naughty Nine comes out tomorrow on Disney Channel and the world will get to meet the team planning a holiday heist. ComicBook.com spoke to the movie's costume designer Julia Caston about crafting the festive wardrobe for these daring kids. We had to start with a question about how to approach Christmas attire for the younger set. From there, once director Alberto Belli's vision has been communicated, it's just a matter of elevating the cool snow day official outfits for a legendary heist. Check out what Caston had to say about helping mold this world down below!

What Makes The Naughty Nine Stand Out?

As out interview continued, we had to ask bout the main characters and their outfits. Winslow Fegley, Imogen Cohen and Ayden Elijah might all be on the same team. But, they've got a specific role to play in The Naughty Nine. As an added bonus, their characters also get another elf outfit to pull off this mission. Things have to start with Fegley's Andy though. He's the man with a plan to get back all their toys from Santa Claus.

"Okay, so. For Winslow, he's the ringleader, right? And I just wanted him to have a real like cool. I wanted to look a little cooler, a little George Clooney, a little like he's the ringleader. We want to know he's the ring leader," Caston shared. "I wanted it to look a little trendy, you know? So I did the hoodie and I did the track pants. And I did a more, based in like reality fashion for him. But, with the fun red and green fabrics and gold. There's gold threads through his fabrics as well. It just gives him a little magic, a little little elevation."

"Then, with Imogen, she plays this great, out there character who's taking risks and going for it. She loves the speed and crashes and stuff. So, I was like, 'you know, what better way to do that than to put her in a track, you know, in a racing suit?' I based it kind of off a Formula One racing suit," the costume designer detailed. "Because I thought, she's there and I wanted it to look streamlined and aerodynamic. So, a lot of her little costumes we made those patches that are kind of based on a race car driver and I thought it would really work for her."

"For Ayden, who plays Albert, we made his little light blue jacket because I was like, 'What is the cutest color?' What is the most sweet looking? That's actually based off of a baby I saw somewhere in England at the store. This little baby jacket. I was like, 'that's the cutest thing I've ever seen.' So, I just recreated it and added my own flare to it," Caston clarified. "For him, that light blue that I thought would pop so nicely in the snow. And, every character, I just took the details of what their characters were and what their objectives were and tried to ground it in their clothes."

What Happens In The Naughty Nine?

"Mischievous fifth grader Andy finds himself without a visit or presents from Santa on Christmas morning. Realizing he must have landed on the "naughty list" and feeling unfairly maligned, Andy pulls together a team of eight other "naughty listers" to help him execute an elaborate heist at the North Pole to get the presents they feel they deserve. Along the way, the group comes to realize that the very best way off the naughty list is to redirect their unique talents for good -- instead of mischief."

Twilight Director Catherine Hardwicke Describes Robert Pattinson's Audition https://comicbook.com/movies/news/twilight-director-catherine-hardwicke-robert-pattinson-edward-cullen-audition/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 23:16:00 +0000 Nicole Drum c3750a6a-cac3-4d3d-bc2e-387bbf824783

Robert Pattinson had a rapid rise to fame as a Hollywood heartthrob thanks to his role as Edward Cullen in Twilight, but while countless fans were "Team Edward", it turns out the studio wasn't exactly sold on the actor. During a question-and-answer session at a recent 15th anniversary screening of Twilight attended by ComicBook.com, director Catherine Hardwicke opened up about Pattinson's audition, revealing that the actor flew out at his own expense to do a chemistry read but that the studio was concerned that he might not be attractive enough to play the role.

"Then Edward was really hard ... because all the cool kid guys that came in and auditioned for it, they looked really cute, but they looked like the guy next door in high school. Not like a hundred-year-old vampire," Hardwicke said. "So, I'm talking to Rob on the phone in London and I'm like, 'We don't have the money for you to fly out, but I need do a chemistry read.' So, he flew out on his own dime, stayed on his agent's couch, comes over to the audition at my house, which is a chemistry read, his shirt's all untucked. He had black scraggly bangs, he hadn't been working out. I was like, 'Oh, okay.' After they did the scenes, I mean at my kitchen table, they did the neurobiology scene. On my bed, the did the kissing scene. So, you guys might know, but he got so riled up, he fell off and hit my floor. Like, dude, calm down."

She continued, "I looked the next day and I watched the footage of them together and I thought, 'This has chemistry, the electricity that you really want that we have to have this moving.' But we soon came over to Summit and they called me up and you know, he had a messy shirt on, like 'How are you going to make this guy look good?' I'm like, 'Dude, he's got the cheek bones.' And he immediately agreed to go and start a badass workout and everything. And the first day that he worked out, he called me and said, 'It's weird.' He was used to just hanging out in pubs and bars and he goes, 'It's kind of weird, but it kind of feels good to me.'"

Hardwicke Also Spoke About How a Meeting With Sean Penn Led to Kristen Stewart's Casting

During the same question and answer session, Hardwicke addressed the casting of Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan, revealing the series of events that led to the actor getting the role -- including a meeting with Sean Penn.

"I directed that movie, Lords of Dogtown. Emile Hirsch is in that movie and I went and showed it to Sean Penn for a bizarre, odd reason," Hardwicke said. "And his kid was a skateboarder and he did the voiceover in the documentary. The Z-Boys. But he wanted to see it and at the end he goes, 'Oh my God, that kid is amazing. Emile Hirsch. Get him on the phone.' So, we called him. He goes, 'I'm going to cast him in Into the Wild. Then they said, 'We're doing early screening of Into the Wild, why don't you come see it?' And I saw Kristen in there, you guys, she's there in the trailer. She just looks like she wants to eat Emile. Okay, she's got the right attitude. And then the full circle thing. And then I wanted to meet her in person. She was out in Pittsburg filming Adventureland. And who went with me? I took an actor with me so that she could audition with an actor, Jackson Rathbone. He's very polite. He carried my suitcase."

The Twilight Saga is Coming to SteelBook 4K Ultra HD

Fans of Twilight will get to relive the story in time for the 15th anniversary of the first film with a new, SteelBook collection 4K Ultra HD release. It's available now with a suggested retail of $119.99.

"Timed to the 15th anniversary of the first film in the franchise, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION - 15TH ANNIVERSARY arrives on a SteelBook(R) 4K Ultra HD(TM) (4K Ultra HD(TM) + Blu-ray(TM) + Digital) on November 14th at Best Buy from Lionsgate. Based on Stephanie Meyer's best-selling novels with screenplays by Melissa Rosenberg (all five films), the film series was directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight), Chris Weitz (The Twilight Saga: New Moon), David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), and Bill Condon (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Parts 1 & 2), and a cast that included Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz, Billy Burke, Michael Sheen, and Dakota Fanning."

Godzilla Minus One Continues Box Office Domination in Japan https://comicbook.com/anime/news/godzilla-minus-one-box-office-japan/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 22:58:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 36db2964-412e-4b66-9064-828e7ff653e5

Godzilla Minus One released in theaters across Japan earlier this month, and the newest movie is still continuing its box office domination overseas! TOHO officially brought Godzilla back to screens with the first new movie project in several years, and the first new Godzilla of the Reiwa era. Godzilla Minus One has shown off a new kind of Godzilla for the modern age, and it's clearly been a hit with fans overseas. As fans in other territories wait for their chance to see the new movie in action, fans in Japan have been flocking to theaters to see it for themselves.

Godzilla Minus One ended the previous weekend still at the top of the box office in Japan, and it marks the third straight week it has been at the number one spot since its debut. With the film recently debuting with a very rare perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the international release in just a matter of weeks, Godzilla Minus One is setting up to take over the world for the rest of the year as fans want to see more of this new take on the classic kaiju.

Godzilla Minus One U.S. Release Date

Godzilla Minus One is now in theaters in Japan and still taking over the box office. Luckily it will be releasing across the United States and Canada beginning on December 1st. Rated PG-13 for "creature violence and action," tickets for the U.S. release are now on sale. Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki (Stand By Me Doraemon 3, Lupin III: The First) for Toho, Godzilla Minus One stars the likes of Ryunosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima, Minami Hamabe as Noriko Oishi, Yuki Yamada as Shiro Mizushima, Munetaka Aoki as Sosaku Tachibana, Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Nada, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ota, and Kuranosuke Sasaki as Yoji Akitsu.

Toho teases what to expect from Godzilla Minus One as such, "After the war, Japan's economic state has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state." Koiju Ueda, President of Toho International further teased the movie as such, "Set in a post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus One will once again show us a Godzilla that is a terrifying and overwhelming force...The concept is that Japan, which had already been devastated by the war, faces a new threat with Godzilla, bringing the country into the 'minus.'"

Star Wars Actress Daisy Ridley Says New Movie Isn't What She Expected https://comicbook.com/movies/news/star-wars-daisy-ridley-new-movie-tease-not-what-you-expect/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 22:40:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt f53a4c5e-21f2-4e60-a3e0-094d5d32664b

Little is known about the future of the Star Wars franchise outside of its biggest bullet points. One of those bullet points is a film featuring the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey, set sometime after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as she rebuilds the Jedi Order. The film, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, is set some 15 years of the fall of the First Order and Sith, and it's a storyline that's getting Ridley excited.

"I will tell you, Steve, when I saw you in Park City, I had not been approached. I was asked some, not by you, but I was asked something when I was there and strangely, people were asking me stuff and I was like, 'No, I'm not doing another one.' Then it all happened after I came back," Ridley said in a new chat with Collider.

That's when she added her return, and what's she found out about the film so far, isn't what she expected. That's a prospect that excites her, the actor added.

"It was such a nice reception. I was shitting myself before I went on stage, because no one knew I was going to that. No one knew I was going to Celebration, bar like Kathy [Kennedy] and there were a couple of people. I was so nervous," the Rise of Skywalker alumnus continued. "It was such a wonderful reception. I'm very excited. The story is really cool. I'm waiting to read a script because, obviously, I don't have any other updates. It's not what I expected, but I'm very excited."

For now, Ridley says the storyline is for one film and not a trilogy or another version of extended storytelling.

"I know the storyline for one film. That's not to say that that's all it is, but that's what I was told about. And I imagine it will be the next film, I think," the actor concluded. "I mean, again, I don't know, post strikes and everything, how quickly everything will start up again. But yes, so far, I know the story of one film and I think people will be very excited."

Ridley's next Star Wars film has yet to set a release date.

Anchorman, Mission: Impossible & Everything Else Leaving Netflix in December 2023 https://comicbook.com/movies/news/netflix-december-2023-movies-tv-leaving-streaming/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 22:09:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely e7513ea4-f881-4a71-ab25-3d1d2223c9a6

This week, Netflix released the complete list of titles that will be making their way to its streaming roster in the month of December. There's plenty to be excited about when it comes to that lineup, especially with The Super Mario Bros. Movie joining the service, but the newsletter also came with a bit of disappointing news as well. In addition to all of the titles being added to Netflix next month, the streamer is also losing quite a few movies and TV shows.

There will be titles leaving Netflix on various days throughout the month, but most of the big departures won't occur until the final week of December. Six seasons of The Adventures of Puss in Boots are set to exit on December 28th, with quite a few popular films exiting on December 31st.

Both of Will Ferrell's Anchorman movies are leaving Netflix at the end of December, along with Kung Fu Panda, Gladiator, Catch Me If You Can, The Wolf of Wall Street, all four Jaws movies, and four films in the Mission: Impossible franchise. In total, there are 28 feature films set to make their Netflix exit as 2023 comes to a close, so subscribers will need to get any rewatches in while they still can.

Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen Is the DCU Spinoff We Deserve https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-pal-jimmy-olsen-dcu-spinoff-superman-legacy/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 21:53:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 70dcc595-919c-4115-b6cf-ee8a81643462

The cast for Superman: Legacy is continuing to take shape, with more and more actors announced for James Gunn's ensemble cast. The latest to join that list is The Righteous Gemstones and Booksmart's Skyler Gisondo, who has been tapped to portray Jimmy Olsen.

While Legacy is still nearly two years away from debuting in theaters, and only nine other projects have been confirmed thus far in Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios slate, Gisondo's casting as Jimmy sets up an interesting possibility. Depending on how things shake out, a solo movie or Max series starring Jimmy Olsen could be perfectly suited for one of the franchise's first spinoffs from Legacy.

Who Is DC's Jimmy Olsen?

Initially created for the Adventures of Superman radio serials, Jimmy first made his comics debut in 1941's Superman #13. A photojournalist for the Daily Planet, Jimmy becomes a close friend and confidant for both Clark Kent and Superman, even learning about his dual identity long before some of Clark's other friends and family, and using a secret comms device to alert him of danger.

During the Silver and Bronze Ages of comics, the overall success of Superman led to Jimmy landing his own solo series, Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, which was later rebranded into the anthology series Superman Family and ran for a total of 222 issues. Superman's Pal presented a litany of wacky stories for Jimmy to appear in, including (but not limited to) morphing into a giant "Turtle Boy", becoming an honorary member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, and tussling with gorillas multiple times. But at the same time, the book provided a stage for major consequences for the DCU -- particularly through Jack Kirby's work on the series, which led to the canonical introduction of Darkseid and the New Gods. The series was relaunched a few years ago with Matt Fraction and Steve Leiber, winning a number of awards and reintroducing these zany concepts (and some new ones) into the modern DC mythos.

What Would Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen Be About?

As comic fans of Jimmy Olsen know -- and as the tenure of Superman's Pal as a comic proves -- the possibilities are basically endless for a live-action spinoff starring Gisondo. It's easy to imagine a number of his hilarious comic-accurate hijinks, from becoming a turtle to having an ongoing prank war with Batman, being realized in a spinoff Max series or movie. At the same time, the hypothetical spinoff could further explore the status quo of the DCU's Metropolis, in the same way that Max's forthcoming The Penguin series is showcasing The Batman's Gotham, without needing Bruce Wayne or Batman to make an appearance.

While a cameo from Clark Kent / Superman (David Corenswet) would certainly be welcome, it wouldn't be necessary for a Jimmy Olsen spinoff to work. Maybe the show could further explore the Daily Planet with subplots involving Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and Perry White, or maybe it could tap into Jimmy's "Hatfields and McCoys"-esque family feud with Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). At this point, it's not even impossible to imagine the DCU repeating the precedent of DC's comics, and using a Jimmy Olsen spinoff to introduce a new live-action on Darkseid. Either way, a Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen project could easily carry the torch of Superman: Legacy, while still feeling like its own lighthearted and goofy entity.

Superman: Legacy: James Gunn Welcomes Newest Cast Members https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-legacy-james-gunn-welcomes-new-cast/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 21:52:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 215a2a3e-0bc1-4e93-ba89-0c967d132531

Superman: Legacy is well into its pre-production, and the film's cast is nearly rounded. After news surfaced revealing Nicholas Hoult is in final talks to play Lex Luthor in the picture, DC Studios revealed additional casting on Tuesday. This time around, Skyler Gisondo and Sara Sampaio have been cast as Jimmy Olsen and Eve Teschmacher, respectively. Superman: Legacy helmer James Gunn wasted no time in welcoming the duo to the production with a social media post-Tuesday afternoon.

"After auditioning hundreds of folks for both of these roles, we finally found perfect fits with both [Skyler Gisondo] and [Sara Sampaio]," said said in his post. "Can't wait for you guys to see them in action the summer of '25!"

Now that Jimmy Olsen and Eve Teschmacher are cast, few characters remain. In stands to reason the film will feature both Ma and Pa Kent, and rumors have suggested Brainiac may serve as the big bad of the film, even though Lex Luthor will also appear.

What is Superman: Legacy going to be about?

When Superman: Legacy picks up, movie-goers will see a world already full of superheroes, and Superman is already in the midst of his crime-fighting career.

Scream Movies Star Melissa Barrera Reportedly Dropped From Scream 7 https://comicbook.com/horror/news/scream-7-melissa-barrera-dropped-exit-israel-palestine-comments/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 21:52:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw fbb2b198-41a8-4eb7-81bc-f7d088f8d12e

Melissa Barrera - the actress best known as the face of the new Scream movie franchise - has reportedly been dropped from Scream 7, which is already in development. Word of Barrera Scream VII exit started to float around the Internet today; however, the reports are stating that she was actually let go from the franchise a while back and that the news is just now coming to light.

Word is that Melissa Barrera sparked controversy (and eventually backlash) with a series of Instagram stories she posted back in October 2023, commenting on the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The Islamist militant group Hamas launched a coordinated massacre of Israeli citizens on October 7, 20230, sparking a fierce conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip region and sparking an even larger debate/argument across the world. Average citizens, celebrities, and world figures alike all got in on the discussion, and inevitably careers and lives were affected by some of the heated exchanges and/or posts that happened afterward.

(Photo: PARAMOUNT)

A Reddit post captured some of what Melissa Barrera had to say in her IG stories - including one post of both the Palestinian flag and the flag of our native country, Mexico, with the attached caption "I too come from a colonized country" / "Palestine WILL be free" while quoting a famous line from Greek poet Dinos Christianopoulos: "they tried to bury us, they didn't know we were seeds".

In a longer and far more direct post, Barrera wrote "I have been actively looking for videos and information about the Palestinian side for the last 2 weeks or so, following accounts etc. Why? Because western media only shows the other side. Why they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself. Usually the algorithm on social media gets the gist. Well... My discover page on IG will ONLY show me videos showing and talking about the Israeli side. Censorship is very real. Palestinians know this, they know the world has been trying to make them invisible for decades. Keep sharing."

Another post showed a video reel of the Palestinian protest marches that occurred in the days and weeks following Israel's counterattacks. The response by Israel against Gaza, in lieu of what Hamas did, has angered various Islamic peoples and those championing the plight of innocent civilians being caught up in and killed by the escalating level of crossfire and deadly ordnance strikes (missiles) in the region. Melissa Barrera is far from the only celebrity to take issue with Isareal's tactics - but it wouldn't be that shocking to learn that the studio and executives behind Scream took issue with Barrera sharing offensive and/or discriminatory conspiracy notions like Western media being controlled and orchestrated. The "why they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself..." line definitely sounds like it ventures into some dark territory...

Scream V and Scream VI are streaming on Paramount+. Scream VII is in development.

Superman: Legacy's James Gunn Debunks New Michael Rooker Rumor https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-legacy-james-gunn-debunks-michael-rooker-rumor-sam-lane/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 21:01:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson f1630490-a522-4bea-aa55-2b98f51b8608

Superman: Legacy is one step closer to becoming a reality, with some major casting decisions being announced for the upcoming DC film. Legacy will be written and directed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, which has led fans to wonder if some of his cinematic staples will continue over to the film. This includes the possibility of some sort of cameo from Michael Rooker, who has appeared in every single one of Gunn's movies, which has kicked off a number of fancasts about his potential role. Rooker was recently rumored to be portraying General Sam Lane, the father of Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), in Legacy -- but now, we've learned the truth about that.

In a recent post on Threads, Gunn confirmed that "it is not" true that General Lane will be appearing in the film, as portrayed by Rooker.

What Is Superman: Legacy About?

Per DC Studios, Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned. Superman: Legacy will be written and directed by Gunn, and will serve as the first film installment of his and Peter Safran's DC Universe reboot.

Superman: Legacy will star David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho.

What Is on the DC Universe Slate?

As Gunn and Safran revealed earlier this year, the initial DC Studios slate for "Gods and Monsters" will include movies for Superman: Legacy, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. It will include the HBO Max television shows Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series.

"A lot of people think it's going to be Marvel 2.0, and definitely I learned a lot of stuff at Marvel. I think that we have a lot of differences," Gunn explained at the time. "We are telling a big, huge, central story that is like Marvel, except for, I think that we're a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning because we've gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely. But we're also creating a universe that is like Star Wars, where there's different times, different places, different things, or Game of Thrones, where characters are a little bit more morally complex."

Jon Hamm Weighs in on Marvel Future After Nearly Playing Mr. Sinister https://comicbook.com/movies/news/jon-hamm-marvel-cinematic-universe-future-plans-mr-sinister-new-mutants-mcu/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 20:55:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 24c97702-d7a3-4748-a6fc-3795b41a4158

Back when 20th Century Fox owned the rights to the X-Men franchise, one concept they toyed with was bringing Mr. Sinister to life in The New Mutants, with Jon Hamm having been attached to potentially play the villain in that project, and while those plans might have fallen apart, Hamm is still open to taking on an iconic role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's future. With The Walt Disney Company acquiring Fox, the rights to the X-Men, as well as the Fantastic Four, have been secured by the studio, with Hamm expressing not only an interest in an X-Men role but also an interest in the Fantastic Four series.

"Those decisions get made at such a high level at this point, definitely above my pay grade. I would love to," Hamm shared with Screen Rant. "I've been a fan of Marvel Comics and comics in general since I was probably single digits. I think there are tons of stories that I'm familiar with, at least, that are still out there to be told."

He added, "Hopefully, whatever their plans are, they include me. But if not, I know that they have a pretty deep bench of folks that are ready to be a part of those stories. There are certainly a lot of stories in the X-Men world to be told. Fantastic Four as well, [like] Doctor Doom. There are so many great things out there. But yeah, I hope I get a chance. Who knows?"

Hamm had previously clarified that, while there may have been talks of him playing Mr. Sinister, and with The New Mutants undergoing a number of reshoots and shifts in its narrative, this casting choice had been far from official.

"Sometimes I find out more about my career from the Internet than I actually find out from my agents. So I didn't really know that was in the works until somebody told me that I didn't get it or it didn't happen," Hamm shared with ComicBookMovie back in 2022 about his interest in a superhero role. "So I really don't know. I'm, like anybody else, would be thrilled to be a part of that storytelling, having been a big comic book fan throughout my early teens and early 20s. So, we'll see. I don't know. It would be a fun person to play, that's for sure. I look good in purple, I'll put it that way."

While Hugh Jackman will be reprising his role of Wolverine for Deadpool 3 and The Marvels offered a tease about the future of the X-Men, there's still plenty of unknown casting decisions about the future of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four within the MCU.

Would you like to see Hamm take on a role in the MCU? Let us know in the comments!

Superman: Legacy Finds Its Eve Teschmacher in Sara Sampaio https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-legacy-eve-teschmacher-sara-sampaio/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 20:08:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 35d77c66-5379-4d25-af9e-392dc5a8e49d

Superman: Legacy has found its Eve Teschmacher to star alongside Lex Luthor. The character of Eve Teschmacher made her movie debut in Superman and Superman II, played by Valerie Perrine. In the DC comics, she's been a loyal assistant to Lex Luthor who has also gotten into the metagene game through cybernetics. According to Deadline, Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) will portray Eve Teschmacher in Superman: Legacy, opposite Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor. Sampaio is an actress and Victoria's Secret model, with her most recent work coming in the Paramount+ rom-com At Midnight.

News of Nicholas Hoult's possible casting as Lex Luthor broke yesterday. There were reports earlier in the year that Hoult was in contention for the role of Lex Luthor, and that he also auditioned to play Superman. David Corenswet ultimately landed the Man of Steel gig for Superman: Legacy. For even more DC rumblings, Hoult was previously in the running to play the Dark Knight in Matt Reeves' The Batman. Along with the Eve Teschmacher news, Superman: Legacy also filled the role of Clark Kent's best friend Jimmy Olsen with Skyler Gisondo.

What is Superman: Legacy About?

DC Studios describes Superman: Legacy as the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned. Superman: Legacy will be written and directed by James Gunn, and will serve as the first film installment of his and Peter Safran's DC Universe reboot.

Nicholas Hoult is no stranger to comic book movies, having starred as Hank McCoy / Beast in X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Star Wars: Hayden Christensen Weighs in on One of Ahsoka's Biggest Debates https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/star-wars-hayden-christensen-anakin-ahsoka-return-debates/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 19:52:00 +0000 Aaron Perine e6e7f4ee-75e3-4cc3-8f5f-12be20c05a78

Star Wars: Ahsoka star Hayden Christensen addressed one of the series' biggest questions. On the heels of the massive announcement about Dave Filoni's promotion at Lucasfilm, the actor talked about whether or not his character was "real" in the recent Disney+ episodes. It seems pretty clear that there were some World Between Worlds shenanigans going on with Ahsoka. But, does that mean that Rosario Dawson's heroine was really reunited with her mentor on that bridge? In the opinion of the Anakin Skywalker actor, probably not. But, he told Vanity Fair that he's willing to leave it up to interpretation without delivering a conclusive answer. Neither Christensen or Filoni will answer up about the series' most hyped sequence. Seeing Ahsoka standing in front of her master in live-action is something that a lot of Star Wars fans had been angling for over the last decade.

"That's the beauty of how the episode is constructed, in my opinion," Christensen explained. "Inevitably, the audience has to question what it is they're watching. Is this really the World Between Worlds? What is the World Between Worlds? Is this actually the spirit of Anakin Skywalker, or is this all in Ahsoka's subconscious and we're just going down the yellow brick road as she's drowning and fighting for her life? I think that the episode provides a few really good clues, but it doesn't spell it out for you."

How Did Anakin Make His Return?

(Photo: Lucasfilm)

The choice to bring Hayden Christensen back into the fold could have been controversial. But, Star Wars fans have rushed to embrace the actor with open arms. Clearly, the response has touched Christensen who though a return impossible at an earlier point in his career. Talking to IGN, director Peter Ramsey explained how the episode that brought Anakin back unfolded. It seems like Dave Filoni absolutely threw him a fastball that he proceeded to hit out of the park.

"I told Dave [Filoni], 'man, you gave me a foolproof episode,'" Ramsey recalled. "I so lucked out because I got the one where all these different strands of the story kind of converge and it blows up. You'd have to really mess up in order for it not to be compelling in the end."

Ramsey would also single out Christensen, calling the star as happy as anybody else to embrace the return of one of Star Wars' biggest characters."He's a really sweet, low-key guy," Ramsey added. "He was pretty happy about being there after all this time. It had a lot of meaning for him."

"We just talked about what it's like for him to be seeing Ahsoka after all this time, that it's a reunion for them," Ramsey mused. "And I just told him, 'it's like you haven't seen your daughter in two years. She'd gone off to college and you're seeing her again and she's like a different person but still your daughter.'"

What Happened In Ahsoka?

"Fan-favorite Star Wars hero Ahsoka Tano returns in the brand new series on Disney+. Rosario Dawson stars in Star Wars: Ahsoka, which premiered on August 22nd on the streamer. The series picks up after the events of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, in which we saw the former Jedi searching for Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) and helping Luke Skywalker train Grogu."

"Ahsoka will be joined on her new mission alongside longtime allies Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) as they attempt to track down Thrawn, who was last seen disappearing to the far reaches of space after a confrontation with Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi). Star Wars: Ahsoka is the latest live-action series from Lucasfilm's creative duo of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni."

Superman: Legacy Casts Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-legacy-cast-skyler-gisondo-jimmy-olsen-dcu/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 19:48:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson c05469e2-934b-4748-ba30-bdfb0b0b9b6f

Superman: Legacy has officially found Superman's best pal. On Tuesday, a report from The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Skyler Gisondo has been cast as Jimmy Olsen in James Gunn's upcoming DC reboot. Gisondo is a fan-favorite actor known for his work on The Righteous Gemstones, Booksmart, and Vacation. Additionally, Sara Sampaio has been cast as Eve Teschmacher, an ally of Lex Luthor.

Initially created for the Adventures of Superman radio serials, Jimmy first made his comics debut in 1941's Superman #13. A photojournalist for the Daily Planet, Jimmy becomes a close friend and confidant for both Clark Kent and Superman, even learning about his dual identity long before some of Clark's other friends and family. During the Silver and Bronze Ages of comics, Jimmy even spun off into his own solo stories, both in the long-running Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen and the anthology series Superman Family. Jack Kirby's work on Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen led to the creation of Darkseid and the New Gods. He recently was the focus of an award-winning 12-issue Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen revival, from Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber.

Bluey Gets Extended Theme Song for Bluey Fest https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/bluey-gets-extended-theme-song-for-bluey-fest/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 19:32:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 8a2e97cc-99f5-429c-b9b0-9e42ae6ccb6f

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has released an extended version of the Bluey theme, timed to celebrate last weekend's Bluey Fest. The marathon, which ran down the 100 most popular Bluey segments as voted on by the audience, is still available to view on the network's website and app, assuming you aren't region-locked. Until noon on November 27, you can watch it anytime on the ABC iview Bluey Fest Live Stream. The extended theme included dance breaks for a guitar solo, followed by Muffin, Socks, Snickers, Winton, PomPom, and Rusty. Apparently they had all come over to the Heelers' house for the BlueyFest viewing party.

The beloved series, which will also have a super-sized episode coming in 2024 that will go longer than 20 minutes for one story, has become a global phenomenon. It's no wonder ABC is celebrating it every chance they get.

You can see the extended theme below.

"It's been amazing. For me, the most incredible part of it is being a part of a show that is having such a beautiful social impact, that is actually putting good out into the world," series star Melanie Zanetti told ComicBook.com last year. "As an actor, you do a lot of stuff and you're like 'Does any of this matter? I'm not doing brain surgery, I'm not doing aid work -- does this have meaning?' And then to have a show where I've had so many parents tell me, 'This has taught me how to play with my kids,' or dads saying 'this has taught me how to parent the way I want to parent.' I had a teacher who told me they had a student with Autism in their class, and it taught this little boy how to play with other kids and has changed his life at school. When I hear things like that, it makes me go, 'Okay, this is important and useful as well as entertaining and fun and beautiful,' and I think for me, that is the most exciting thing."

Here's how ABC described the Bluey Fest marathon:

Pick your five favourite Bluey episodes and enjoy the Biggest Little Bluey Countdown...for real life!

To celebrate 5 Years of Bluey on ABC Kids, we're counting down the top 100 episodes in the Biggest Little Bluey Countdown!

On Sunday 19 November, Bluey will be taking over the ABC Kids channel from 6am as we count down the top 100 episodes as voted by those who know them best - you and your family!

Expend4bles Is Now Available On 4K: Is It Worth It? https://comicbook.com/movies/news/expend4bles-expendables-4-is-now-available-on-4k-review/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 19:21:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 27bfd5fb-24eb-42bc-afc7-1bf9c63addaa

The fourth installment to The Expendables franchise, Expend4bles, was released in theaters in September and it saw the return of franchise staples Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture. This time around, the returning cast was joined by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, Andy Garcia, and Iko Uwais. While the movie's turn at the box office wasn't as successful as the previous three installments, hardcore fans of the franchise who collect physical media are likely eager to get their hands on the new 4K release. However, is it worth owning for the more casual fans? ComicBook.com obtained an early copy and checked out the film in 4K in addition to the special features, including a commentary by director Scott Waugh.

As someone who genuinely enjoyed this film, I was very happy to get my eyes back on it in the comfort of my own home. The Expendables is one of my favorite franchises, and I'm definitely more in line with the 71% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes than the 14% critics score. It's impossible for me to have a bad time when these dudes get together. Admittedly, the 4K transfer is almost too good. A lot of the effects leave something to be desired, and it's especially notable in such a crisp version. For me, that only adds to the charm, but other viewers might not be as forgiving.

The most fascinating part of the film's physical media release was the special feature, "Bigger, Bolder, Badder: The Expendables in Action." There was a surprising amount of practical stunts done in the film, and the featurette showcases the work done by the second unit. Due to the movie's green screen-heavy look, there are moments one would assume were done on a computer, but that's not the case. It was interesting to see what was done behind the scenes in comparison to the final result.

The other featurette, "More Than a Team: New Blood Meets Old Blood," wasn't quite as interesting, but it's always nice to hear actors talk about their characters. It's clear the cast had a fun time making the movie.

As for Waugh's commentary, it's not a must-listen unless you're a huge fan like me. It's a shame they didn't get any of the cast in there, but Waugh's perspective is interesting as someone who comes from stunts. A fun fact is that he doubled for Andy Garcia back in 1998 on the film Desperate Measures. They reunited for this film, but Garcia didn't initially remember him.

The DVD and Blu-ray versions of the film include the same special features. However, if you get the Amazon exclusive, there are some extra features, including "We Get the Job Done: Breaking Down the Fighting Styles" and "Costuming The Expendables." There is also an exclusive SteelBook(R) Collection featuring The Expendables, The Expendables 2, The Expendables 3, and Expend4bles available exclusively at Walmart.

Expend4bles is now available on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD. Do you plan on adding it to your collection? Let us know in the comments!

Marvel Comics Writer Danny Fingeroth Opens Up About New Jack Ruby Book, Aspirations For a Live-Action Adaptation https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-comics-writer-danny-fingeroth-jack-ruby-book-aspirations-adaptation/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 19:14:00 +0000 Liam Crowley 32c94eb0-ea38-44ec-b899-3251c1491847

Legendary comic writer Danny Fingeroth is embracing a new challenge: a non-fiction investigative dive into one of the most infamous pieces of American history. Jack Ruby: The Many Faces of Oswald's Assassin chronicles the life of the titular man who was responsible for killing Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassinator of President John F. Kennedy. This project represents the first time that the longtime Marvel scribe is working outside of the world of superheroes.

"It started about 10 years ago as a graphic novel," Fingeroth told ComicBook.com. "It was coming up on the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination, and I wasn't somebody who was obsessed with it, but I was interested in it and I wanted to try a nonfiction biography slash history comic."

The print medium is not completely alien to Fingeroth. His bibliography includes titles like Superman On The Couch and A Marvelous Life: The Amazing Story of Stan Lee.

"Everything I've written is somewhere around the world of comics. I guess it was a challenge to me and to whatever writing skills I might have, those various writing and researching muscles. Can I do something that's out of my comfort zone?" Fingeroth continued. "Writing about Stan Lee, I'd sort of in a way been researching it since I was six years old. It was both as a fan and then working at Marvel and working with Stan. This was a challenge to see if I can write something nonfiction that's not about comics or publishing. That was a big thing that was both scary and appealing about it to me to see if I could learn."

While he has been developing Jack Ruby for a decade, the JFK assassination has been circulating in Fingeroth's mind since adolescence. Fingeroth was 10 years old on that fateful day in Dealey Plaza.

"The thing is, when you're 10 years old, you don't know. 'Oh, maybe this is just what happens.' That was 1963, and then 1965 Malcolm X was assassinated," Fingeroth recalled. "1968, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. If it didn't seem to me at 10 that this is just how the world is, it certainly was occurring to me by the time I was 15. It is sort of this cumulative cultural trauma that you're a part of."

Even 60 years later, the JFK assassination is still prevalent in modern media. Jack Ruby himself has been portrayed in multiple live-action projects including Ruby (1992) and most recently in The Umbrella Academy Season 2. If Fingeroth gets his way, his book will be the next to bring Oswald's assassin to Hollywood.

"That is one of my hopes for it, and something that my people and my agent and lawyer are exploring those possibilities," Fingeroth said. "I've had some interesting experiences already about that. It's certainly open and I'm interested in doing something with it like that.

"No story I've written has been adapted for a Marvel movie or TV show, but there are bits and pieces, scenes or subplots that are stuff I've worked on," Fingeroth continued. "That's a weird enough out-of-body experience to see that happen when you're in a theater or watching something on TV."

Jack Ruby: The Many Faces of Oswald's Assassin is now available in bookstores and online.

New Karate Kid Movie To Include Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan https://comicbook.com/movies/news/karate-kid-movie-ralph-macchio-jackie-chan/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 18:50:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 499e7cac-3d62-4e3c-9243-3cc4908133b6

Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan are teaming up for a new Karate Kid movie. Both actors starred in separate installments of the fan-favorite franchise, which has also spawned the spinoff series Cobra Kai on Netflix. This time, both of Macchio and Chan's characters will interact together in this new take on Karate Kid, which comes from director Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World, I'm Not Okay with This)
with a script by Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit, Alexander and the Terrible). A global casting search is being held to find the titular Karate Kid, who will be a Chinese kid from the East Coast who finds strength and direction through the mentoring they get from their instructors. A video featuring Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan was released for the global talent search, which you can see below.

Plot details on this new Karate Kid are being kept under wraps by Sony Pictures, but we do know the film will be released in theaters on December 13, 2024. Ralph Macchio starred as Daniel LaRusso in the original The Karate Kid and its successors, The Karate Kid Part II and The Karate Kid Part III. Cobra Kai saw Macchio reprise the role, where he also served as Executive Producer for the six-time Emmy-nominated comedy series. Jackie Chan played Mr. Han, a Mr. Miyagi-type figure for Jaden Smith's Dre Parker, in 2010's The Karate Kid remake. In 2016, Chan became the first Chinese actor to be honored with an Academy Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the film industry.

Cobra Kai ending with Season 6

The new Karate Kid movie comes just in time, as Netflix's Cobra Kai is set to conclude with Season 6. In a statement from the showrunners, they promised that the series will end on a high note with its biggest season yet, but revealed that the stories of Daniel and Johnny will once again come to a close.

"Reacquanting the world with The Karate Kid universe has been our humble honor," the producers said in a statement. "Making Cobra Kai has allowed us to join the same hallowed dojo once inhabited by the great Robert Mark Kamen, John Avildsen, Jerry Weintraub, and all the amazing original cast memebrs. It has also enabled us to play sensei, expanding the original storylines and birthing new generations of underdogs. We've never once taken this opportunity for granted."

"Our day one goal with Cobra Kai has always been to end it on our terms, leaving the Valley in the time and place we've always imagined. So it is with immense pride and thankfulness that were are able to announce that achievement," the statement continues.

A release date has not been announced for Season 6.

Star Wars: Dave Filoni Reveals His Major Promotion at Lucasfilm https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-dave-filoni-promotion-lucasfilm-confirmed-chief-creative-officer/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 18:35:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh e45c0ed8-74d1-4398-a3cd-7420230a609b

Thanks to his work on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, fans have appreciated Dave Filoni's contributions to the galaxy far, far away for more than a decade, as the filmmaker has become a more and more prominent figure at Lucasfilm, with Filoni himself confirming he is now the chief creative officer at the studio. While Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has long expressed her support of Filoni and how she would consult with him on various projects, Filoni's role will now see him being involved with Star Wars projects much closer to their inception as opposed to offering his input as more substantial projects.

"Now I'm what's called chief creative officer of Lucasfilm," Filoni revealed to Vanity Fair. "In the past, in a lot of projects I would be brought into it, I would see it after it had already developed a good ways."

He continued, "In this new role, it's opened up to basically everything that's going on ... When we're planning the future of what we're doing now, I'm involved at the inception phase."

Kennedy still serves as the president of the studio, while this promotion will see Filoni collaborating more closely not only with Kennedy, but also with Carrie Beck, who is head of development at the studio.

"I'm not telling people what to do," Filoni expressed. "But I do feel I'm trying to help them tell the best story that they want to tell. I need to be a help across the galaxy here, like a part of a Jedi Council almost."

Filoni worked closely with Star Wars creator George Lucas while developing The Clone Wars, and when Lucas sold his studio to The Walt Disney Company in 2012, this resulted in the unexpected end of the animated series. Luckily, Filoni continued working with the studio on Rebels, which ultimately led to him pivoting to the world of live-action directing, as well as a revival of The Clone Wars, the development of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, and the development of Star Wars: Ahsoka. Earlier this year, it was announced that Filoni would direct a film set during The New Republic, which would bring together narrative threads from The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett.

The filmmaker confirmed that his new position won't impact the projects he's more directly attached to, such as his movie or a potential Season 2 of Ahsoka.

"To truly help filmmakers, it was really important for me to experience it firsthand," Filoni detailed. "I can also lend a perspective on the challenges that telling these stories will present. I feel more capable of actually being helpful outside of just saying, 'Well, Jedi are like this, and Sith are like this...'"

Stay tuned for updates on the future of the Star Wars franchise.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Director Confirms Sequel's Timeline https://comicbook.com/movies/news/kingdom-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-timeline-confirmed-sequel-wes-ball-explained/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 17:35:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh cf131c86-5785-47c5-ac70-b3d3f9936835

The last entry in the Planet of the Apes franchise, War for the Planet of the Apes, landed in theaters back in 2017, though according to director of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Wes Ball, the narrative timeline within the franchise has undergone a more significant passage of time. The filmmaker didn't specify exactly how much time had passed, though he noted that the ape community had undergone substantial cultural development from what we last saw in the most recent entry. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is currently slated to hit theaters on May 24, 2024.

"I wanted to do a big leap forward in time," Ball confirmed with Empire Magazine. "It's significant enough that Caesar is still a spirit in the movie, but most of his living relatives are not in this picture. If the last three movies were the Stone Age, here we get to see what happens when they enter the Bronze Age."

The new movie is described, "Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar's reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike."

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes stars Owen Teague (IT), Freya Allan (The Witcher), Kevin Durand (Locke & Key), Peter Macon (Shameless), and William H. Macy (Fargo).

While the previous trilogy of Apes films served somewhat as an origin story for the long-running franchise, Ball explained how he's heightening the adventure to more epic proportions.

"When I first started on it, I said, 'I feel like Apes needs a little bit of Star Wars,'" Ball admitted. "It's all still very grounded in reality, but it is essentially a quest narrative. Our main character -- the young, impressionable Noa [Teague] -- meets characters along the way and becomes awakened as he winds up in a place that will test him, and he ultimately becomes his true self."

He added, "We haven't kiddified it, or Disney-fied it, if I'm allowed to say that! ... But we have brought a younger spirit to it."

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is slated to hit theaters on May 24, 2024.

Mobile Suit Gundam Is Making a Special VR Movie https://comicbook.com/anime/news/mobile-suit-gundam-virtual-reality-movie/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 16:51:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 6bdc0476-68a7-4e21-ba5e-4080a6cc3e58

One of the big ways that the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise has been able to stay relevant is its ability to place its mech suits in alternate realities and timelines. Most recently, the franchise saw serious success with its first female protagonist in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury. While the anime has explored countless universes, a new film will see the mechs arrive in the world of virtual reality thanks to Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom.

At this year's Anime NYC convention, Bandai Namco Filmworks announced that it will be teaming up with the company Atlas V to create a new virtual reality movie. In further fleshing out the project Atlas V Co-Founder, Pierre Zandrowicz, stated that the virtual reality adventure wasn't a video game, "This is not a game, nor is it just a narrative experience--it's an immersive adventure that leverages the best of both worlds." At present, no footage from the movie has been released, leaving fans to wonder if this will explore a previous universe in the Gundam series or a brand new reality featuring the mech suits.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom Trailer

The Gundam series has quite a few projects on the way, including a sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam: Seed Freedom and a new television series, Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance. While there has been little news released recently, the franchise is also aiming to release future entries in the Hathaway's Flash series and Netflix is currently working on a live-action adaptation for its platform. Despite having decades of stories in the tank, the Gundam series doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon.

While no footage was shown from Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom, an official description reads as such from Bandai Namco Filmworks, "In this immersive anime, you'll be able to experience the Gundam world like never before, with immersive visuals and interactive elements that bring the epic saga to life. The narrative-driven experience promises to deliver a unique journey through the Gundam universe, offering fans a new way to connect."

Will you be strapping on a virtual reality headset to experience this new chapter of Mobile Suit Gundam? What has been your favorite Gundam story to date? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of Gundam.

Face/Off Director John Woo Reveals Why He Doesn't Watch Superhero Movies https://comicbook.com/movies/news/john-woo-superhero-movies-reaction-comic-books-marvel-mcu-dc-martin-scorsese/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 16:40:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 8f871c8c-5de7-434c-b5b6-ec49f347ac16

Filmmaker John Woo is a legend in the world of action cinema, with movies like Face/Off, Hard Boiled, and The Killer being defining entries into the genre, and despite superhero films often delivering copious amounts of combat, he recently expressed his disinterest in the entire genre. The filmmaker's comments weren't in regards to comic book movies dominating the pop culture landscape just in recent memory, as he confirmed that he never had much interest in movies that rely heavily on special effects, preferring more grounded stories like the latest from filmmaker Martin Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon. John Woo's latest Hollywood film, Silent Night, hits theaters on December 1st.

"I've never liked watching movies with big special effects, or anything based on comic books," Woo shared with The New Yorker. "I prefer Martin Scorsese's movies, that kind of cinema. I can't wait to watch Killers of the Flower Moon. I like old-fashioned movies, you know? Real cinema. There aren't many movies like that lately."

While this is sure to ruffle the feathers of some comic book fans, it's also possible that his disinterest will reflect the overall trend of the growing tedium among audiences, as films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and The Marvels have all been underperforming at the box office, a stark contrast to the financial domination such films normally experience.

Woo's latest film marks his first U.S. film since 2003's Paycheck, with Silent Night putting a literal spin on the holiday-centric phrase, as it is an experience that is free of any dialogue.

Silent Night is described, "From legendary director John Woo and the producer of John Wick comes this gritty revenge tale of a tormented father (Joel Kinnaman) who witnesses his young son die when caught in a gang's crossfire on Christmas Eve. While recovering from a wound that costs him his voice, he makes vengeance his life's mission and embarks on a punishing training regimen in order to avenge his son's death. Full of Woo's signature style, Silent Night redefines the action genre with visceral, thrill-a-minute storytelling."

Silent Night lands in theaters on December 1st.
